Scientifically Proven-Effective Ingredients:

Scivation's goal when designing Novem was to use ingredients with legit scientific backing, specifically studies done on humans that showed benefits. Our goal was not to search pubmed for an herbal extract that no one has heard of that has one in-vitro study on it with no proof it provides benefits to humans in an attempt to awe consumers with a never before seen ingredient. No instead we put research proven-effective ingredients in their research-backed dosages together in a formula that will truly enhance your training results. Novem is not a “pump” product or an “insane energy buzz” product that only provides transient effects; Novem is a pre-workout product that will deliver actual improvements in your performance and results.

Novem is Latin for “nine” signifying the nine synergistic ingredients in the formula:

  • Creatine Monohydrate
  • Beta-Alanine
  • Taurine
  • N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine
  • Caffeine Anhydrous
  • N-Acetyl-Cysteine
  • NA-R-ALA
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E

We will take in in-depth look into each ingredient, highlighting studies done in humans, and show why Novem is a superior pre-workout formula.

Creatine Monohydrate:

Creatine, naturally found in the body, is synthesized from the amino acids methionine, arginine, and glycine. Creatine is used to regenerate ATP, the body’s primary source of energy. Skeletal muscle contains a limited amount of creatine. Increasing the amount of creatine in muscles through creatine supplementation increases the body’s ability to regenerate ATP and supply energy to during exercise thereby enhancing performance. Based on scientific research and results, creatine monohydrate is the most effective form of supplemental creatine.

Creatine monohydrate has been extensively studied and its’ benefits are well established in scientific literature. Creatine monohydrate has been shown to:

  • Increase power output (Becque, 2000)
  • Increase high-intensity exercise performance (Tarnopolsky, 2000)
  • Increase work capacity (Rico-Sanz, 2000)
  • Increase muscle size and strength (Willoughby, 2001)
  • Augment the strength training induced increase in satellite cell number and myonuclei number thereby enhancing muscle growth (Olsen, Aagaard et al. 2006)
  • Enhanced muscle glycogen accumulation and glucose transporter (GLUT4) expression (Hespel and Derave 2007)

Creatine monohydrate has been proven to improve performance and lean mass gains time and time again in scientific studies. Additional benefits of creatine monohydrate are being continuously found, making creatine monohydrate a must have supplement for any athlete. Novem contains high quality micronized creatine monohydrate.

Beta-Alanine:

Beta-alanine is one of the two amino acids (histidine being the other) that makes up the dipeptide carnosine (L-beta-alanyl-L-histidine). Carnosine is an important metabolic buffer in skeletal muscle, which means it helps maintain the acid-base balance in the presence of high free H+/free radical concentrations. High levels of H+ during exercise cause fatigue and decrease performance. Increasing carnosine levels through beta-alanine supplementation will decrease the accumulation of H+ during exercise delaying fatigue and improving performance.

Growing research shows Beta-alanine to be a very effective performance enhancers and lean mass building supplement. Research shows Beta-Alanine to:

  • Enhance endurance performance when combined with creatine monohydrate (Zoeller, 2006)
  • Delay the onset of neuromuscular fatigue (Stout, 2006)
  • Lead to greater increases in lean mass when added to creatine monohydrate than creatine hydrate alone (Hoffman, 2006).
  • Increase total work done during aerobic exercise (Hill, 2007).

It is clear that current research shows Beta-Alanine to be an effective performance enhancer and enhances lean mass gains when combined with creatine. Novem contains CarnoSyn® the patented form of beta-alanine.

Taurine:

Taurine, a nonessential amino acid, is the most abundant amino acid in skeletal muscle, the heart, brain, leukocytes, and the retina of the eye. Unlike other amino acids, taurine is not used in protein synthesis. Taurine is involved in calcium modulation, cell membrane stabilization, modulation of neuronal excitability, bile acid conjugation, detoxification, and cell volume regulation. Exercise depletes taurine levels in the working skeletal muscles, specifically from fast-twitch muscle fibers, therefore supplementing to taurine to meet this increased metabolic demand is a smart idea.

Taurine has been shown to:

  • Decrease exercise-induced oxidative stress and increase exercise performance (Zhang 2004)
  • Increase fat oxidation during endurance exercise (Rutherford 2010)

Supplementing with taurine around training will ensure your body has the taurine it needs for optimal performance and recovery.

N-Acetyl - Tyrosine:

Tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid used to make the catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, thyroid hormones, and the skin pigment melanin. Stress, such as exercise, depletes the amount of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. Supplementing with tyrosine will ensure your body has the materials it needs for dopamine and norepinephrine production

Tyrosine supplementation has been shown to:

  • Decrease the negative effects of stress (Banderet, 1989)
  • Decrease fatigue and increase cognitive performance (Neri, 1995)
  • Decrease cardiovascular stress and enhance cognitive activity (Dollins, 1995)

Supplementing with tyrosine pre-workout will allow you to workout harder and longer by delaying fatigue and increasing cognitive performance. Novem contains the acetylated form of tyrosine acetyl-L-tyrosine, which provides increased stability and solubility in water.

Caffeine Anhydrous

Caffeine, a plant alkaloid belonging to the drug class methylxanthines and is found in natural sources such as coffee beans, tea leaves, cocoa beans, and other plants, is the world’s most widely used stimulant. Caffeine is a Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant shown to delay fatigue and improve cognitive performance.

Caffeine acts as an adenosine receptor antagonist. Adenosine decreases the release of stimulatory/excitatory neurotransmitters (i.e. norepinephrine [NE]). Therefore, blocking the adenosine receptor allows a greater excitation to occur by increasing NE’s ability to activate the adrenergic receptors.

Caffeine inhibits phosphodiesterase (PDE), causing a build-up of cAMP levels and greater effect of NE on fatty acid lipolysis. PDE blunts lipolysis; therefore inhibiting PDE allows lipolysis to proceed at an accelerated rate. The end result is there are more fatty acids available for oxidation after consumption of caffeine, which is one of the ways caffeine is believes to increase performance.

Studies have shown caffeine to:

  • Increase thermogenesis and lipid oxidation (Bracco, Ferrarra et al. 1995)
  • Increase peak power output (Lee, Lin et al. 2011)
  • Improve endurance performance (Ping, Keong et al. 2010)

Novem contains high quality caffeine anhydrous.

N-Acetyl-Cysteine:

N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) is derived from the non-essential amino acid cysteine. NAC is an antioxidant itself and is also used to synthesize the antioxidant glutathoine. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant and also regenerates vitamin C and E. Glutathione is depleted during intense exercise; Supplementing with NAC can help restore depleted glutathione levels. Oxidative stress caused by free radicals, causes fatigue and muscular soreness. Supplementing with NAC will enhance athletic performance by scavenging these free radicals by acting as an antioxidant itself and increasing the levels of glutathione and

NAC supplementation has been shown to:

  • Improve exercise performance by increasing cysteine and glutathione availability (Medved, Brown et al. 2004)
  • Delays fatigue (McKenna, Medved et al. 2006)
  • Decrease muscle soreness and oxidative stress from exercise (Silva, Silveira et al. 2008)
  • Decrease respiratory muscle fatigue during exercise (Kelly, Wicker et al. 2009)

Cysteine supplementation is very unstable, making supplementing with the more stable NAC, found in Novem, ideal.

NA-R-ALA:

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is an enzyme naturally produced in the body that functions as a co-factor for energy production and is a potent antioxidant. Unlike most antioxidants, which are either fat or water soluble and only have antioxidant properties in some tissues, ALA has antioxidant properties in all tissues. This is because ALA is water soluble and its metabolite dihydrolipoic acid is fat soluble, allowing it to reach all tissues. In addition to this, ALA recycles itself and vitamin C, works synergistically with vitamin E, and increases glutathione levels.

ALA is believed to increase insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake by increase translocation of the glucose transporter Glut-4. Increasing insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake can lead to beneficial changes in body composition as well as improvement in ones general health.

ALA has been shown to:

  • Increase muscle creatine content when combined with creatine (above creatine alone) (Burke, Chilibeck et al. 2003)
  • Decrease oxidative damage caused by exercise (Zembron-Lacny, Slowinska-Lisowska et al. 2009)

The racemix version of ALA contains an R-isomer and an S-isomer. The R-isomer of ALA is the isomer that possesses the beneficial effects of ALA. R-ALA is a great supplement but its stability and bioavailability can be improved by supplementing with the stabilized R-ALA sodium salt (NA-R-ALA), which is why we chose NA-R-ALA for the Novem formula.

Vitamin C:

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is a water soluble vitamin involved in synthesis of bones, ligaments, collagen, and blood vessels, production of carnitine, and acts as an antioxidant.

Vitamin C has been shown to:

  • Reduce muscle soreness (Bryer and Goldfarb 2006)
  • Reduce exercise-induced oxidative damage (Sureda, Tauler et al. 2008)
  • Prevent exercise-induced lipid peroxidation and muscle damage (Nakhostin-Roohi, Babaei et al. 2008)

Vitamin C cannot be produced by the body and therefore must be obtained through the diet. Supplementing with vitamin C from Novem around workouts will decrease muscle damage and soreness.

Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant. Vitamin E scavenges peroxyl radicals and inhibits lipid peroxidation of cell membranes, decreasing oxidative damage.

Vitamin E has been shown to:

  • Decrease muscle damage (Itoh, Ohkuwa et al. 2000)
  • Reduce exercise-induced oxidative damage (Rokitzki, Logemann et al. 1994 and Sureda, Tauler et al. 2008)

Taking vitamin E around your workout, like vitamin C, will decrease muscle damage and sorness. Novem contains Alpha tocopherol, the most active form of vitamin E in the body.

Novem contains nine ingredients that are scientifically proven to enhance performance and results in humans. Every ingredient in Novem contains scientific backing. Supplementing with Novem will:

  • Increase muscle size and strength
  • Enhance performance and recovery
  • Reduce oxidative stress and muscle damage
  • Boost energy and cognitive performance
  • Delay fatigue
  • Enhance fat oxidation

Novem is replacing Quake 10.0. The differences between NOVEM and Quake 10.0:
