What is a typical cycle of Epistane™?
· A typical cycle of Epistane lasts 3-5 weeks and has a range of dosages around 20-40mg. Most people run a cycle similar to 20/30/30/40 or some variation. Others, looking for large mass gains, are running 40mg for 4 weeks or more. It is important to ramp up the dosage in the beginning, even if only for a few days.
What is pulse cycling? (posted in the Epistane™ forum at IBE, written by Dr.D)
Dosing something to intentionally avoid long term sides, such as HTPA suppression and liver damage. With pulsing, the serious, long term side effects of chronic oral treatment are avoided and short term side effect, like acne and mineral retention, are milder that usual. This allows for higher dosages to be used. Basically, if you dosed on an ED basis you would get 100% effect, 100% short term sides and 100% long term sides. If you dose EOD on a pulse protocol, you still get about 60% effect, 75% short term sides but only about 40% of the long term sides. That’s not a bad trade off and very economical on the body and the wallet too! Of course if you would have gained 10lbs this means you will only gain 6lbs pulsing, but it also means you can do this for 2 or 3 times longer than a normal cycle. That equals about 2 months of worry free dosing, so the net effect is a gain of about 12lbs instead of 10lbs over twice the time frame with less sides and a milder PCT requirement if even needed at all. It’s a great long term strategy and good for newer users looking to run fast, clean, cycles for 1 month with no PCT needed later. That’s how I perfected it. There are two basic approaches to do it: EOD or 2on/2off depending on your workout schedule. Doses can be high (30-40mg) but take them close together preferably before 6pm (1 dose pre and 1 dose post-w/o instead of spread out like normal) or doses can be lower (10-20mg) if you want to stretch it to 2 or 3 months instead of just 1. Dose at least 3 times per week but not more than 4.

How Epistane™ Works

Battling Gyno
Estradiol is the strongest form of estrogen in the human body, effecting several organs. Estradiol enters cells freely and interacts with a cytoplasmic target cell receptor (ERα and ERβ). When the estrogen receptor has bound its ligand it can enter the nucleus of the target cell and regulate gene transcription which leads to formation of messenger RNA. The mRNA interacts with ribosomes to produce specific proteins that express the effect of estradiol upon the target cell. Epistane™ works by binding and deactivating the ERβ so that no estrodiol-elicited effects can be carried out in the cell. In the case of breast tissue ERβ is the primary target receptor responsible for growth and proliferation. Epistane™ binds to the ERβ and not only disables the receptor from binding to estradiol, it actually puts the cell in an estrogen deprived state, which decreases the cells viability and leads to a decrease in size and eventual cell death. Other SERMs also block the ERβ receptor and AI’s even block the formation of Estradiol from testosterone conversion. However, the effectiveness at the receptor and long term side effects vary. Produced by the body, N-acetylcysteine (commonly called NAC) is a form of the amino acid cysteine. Hawthorne Berries have been used since the 19th century to support the heart, and to normalize cardiovascular functions. Primary chemical constituents of this herb include Vitamin C, flavonoids (quercetin, quercetrin), glycosides, proanthocyanidins, anthocynaidins, saponins, tannins, and cratetegin (most prevalent in the flowers, then leaves, then berries).

Policosonol

Heart attack and stroke have been associated with high levels of a type of cholesterol known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (“bad” cholesterol) and low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (“good” cholesterol). Reversing these trends can lower the risk for these and other artery-related diseases.

Policosanol is a dietary supplement that can normalize cholesterol as well or better than drugs, without side effects. Efficacy and safety have been proven in numerous clinical trials, and it has been used by millions of people in other countries. Policosanol lowers LDL-cholesterol and raises protective HDL-cholesterol. This compares favorably with cholesterol-lowering drugs which have the drawback of side effects such as liver dysfunction and muscle atrophy. Policosanol is free of these side effects.
What makes policosanol exciting is that it has other actions against heart disease in addition to lowering cholesterol. Like statin drugs, policosanol helps stop the formation of artery lesions. This was proven in studies on rabbits fed a diet designed to create high cholesterol.

One of policosanol’s important actions is to inhibit the oxidation of LDL. Oxidized LDL is dangerous. It promotes the destruction of blood vessels by creating a chronic inflammatory response. Oxidized LDL can also provoke metalloproteinase enzymes. These enzymes promote blood vessel destruction, partly by interfering with HDL’s protective effect. Studies show that rats treated with policosanol have fewer foam cells, reflecting less inflammatory response causing less blood vessel destruction.

Another action of policosanol is to reduce the proliferation of cells on the lining of the arteries. Healthy arteries are lined with a smooth layer of cells so that blood can race through with no resistance. One of the features of diseased arteries is that this layer becomes thick and overgrown with cells. As the artery narrows, blood flow slows down or is blocked completely. Policosanol was tested for its ability to stop the proliferation of these cells. According to the results, policosanol’s ability to stop cell overgrowth “is in agreement with the antiproliferative effects reported for other lipid-lowering drugs, such as most of the statins.”
Policosanol also inhibits the formation of clots, and may work synergistically with aspirin in this respect. In a comparison of aspirin and policosanol, aspirin was better at reducing one type of platelet aggregation (clumping together of blood cells). But policosanol was better at inhibiting another type. Together, policosanol and aspirin worked better than either alone. A related effect is that significant reductions in the level of thromboxane occur in humans after two weeks of policosanol. Thromboxane is a blood vessel-constricting agent that contributes to abnormal platelet aggregation that can cause a heart attack or stroke. 5

Idebenone
Idebenone is an analog of the very popular CoQ10. In most respects, Idebenone shares its traits with Coenzyme Q10 and like Coenzyme Q10 is might be useful for aging. It differs from it in some important ways, which may make it more useful. Under certain circumstances, Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may become a pro-oxidant. These circumstances are conditions in which hypoxia or lack of oxygen occurs.

In cases of shock, heart attack, stroke, or poor circulation, CoQ10 auto-oxidizes and unleashes massive amounts of various free radicals that damage delicate tissues and because CoQ10 is necessary for electron transport and ATP (chemical energy) production, cellular death may ensue. Idebenone, on the other hand, suppresses free radicals and continues ATP production in hypoxic situations. This may make it a useful supplement for individuals at risk for those conditions.

Other important traits of Idebenone not shared by CoQ10 include the ability to raise the brain’s serotonin levels like the SSRI antidepressants (Prozac) and it also increases the brain levels of nerve growth factor. Saw Palmetto is a small, palm-like plant native to North America. Native Americans and early American settlers used the berries to treat problems associated with the genitals, urinary tract and reproductive system. This herb is called the “plant catheter” due to its therapeutic effect on the neck of the bladder and the prostate in men. Saw Palmetto is widely used in Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom and now the U.S. for nutritionally benefiting the prostate and urinary tract. It has been marketed as an aphrodisiac for both men and women.
The active constituents are volatile oil, steroidal saponin, tannins, and polysaccharides. Saw Palmetto is a tonic, and is one of the few herbal remedies that are considered to be anabolic – it strengthens and builds body tissues.

For men it treats an enlarged and weakened prostate gland. It has shown significant action in treatment of conditions associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Saw palmetto extract works to prevent testosterone from converting into dihydrotestosterone, the hormone thought to cause prostrate cells to multiply, leading to an enlarged prostate. The largest use today is as a supplement for reducing enlarged prostate glands, treating urinary tract problems and for improving body strength.8

Nettle Root (10:1 Urtica dioica)
The roots of stinging nettle may be used to relieve the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. The prostate is part of the male reproductive system. The urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, passes through the prostate gland. For most men, BPH is a normal part of aging. An enlarged prostate may cause men to have trouble starting or maintaining urination, need to urinate more often, have urine leaks, or need to urinate during the night. Stinging nettle root contains chemicals that may prevent or delay the growth of prostate cells by interfering with an enzyme. In several studies, nettle root products have shown general effectiveness for relieving the symptoms of BPH. Frequently, it is included with other herbals such as pygeum and saw palmetto in “Prostate Formulas”. It has also been known to reduce the levels of serum Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, which binds to testosterone in the blood and renders it inactive.

Nettle root is also being studied for potential anti-inflammatory and blood pressure lowering effects. In studies of laboratory animals, nettle root extract seemed to reduce artificially-produced inflammation. How it worked is not known. Results from other laboratory studies may show that nettle root may relax blood vessels and stabilize the force of heartbeats. Both of these effects may contribute to lowering blood pressure. All these possible effects need further study, however.9

Beta-Sitosterol
As one of several phytosterols, plant compounds with chemical structures similar to that of cholesterol, beta-sitosterol is commonly found in foods such as wheat germ, soybeans, and corn oil. Over the past few years, concentrated extracts of this particular phytosterol have been tested for lowering cholesterol and lessening such discomforts of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as frequent and painful urination.
Beta-sitosterol appears to reduce cholesterol levels by blocking absorption of cholesterol. A review of several double-blind studies designed to test the efficacy of beta-sitosterol in men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia showed that the phytosterol (beta-sitostero) significantly improved urological symptoms and flow measure in study participants.

Other purported benefits of Beta-sitosterol include boosting immunity and normalizing blood sugar, relieving inflammation, healing ulcers, enhancing uterine tone, and alleviating cramps. However, these health benefits of beta-sitosterol have not been substantiated by scientific evidence.

In this issue of our Industry Spotlight Interview, we are honored to have the opportunity to speak with industry guru, Matt Cahill, CEO and founder of Designer Supplements. NP: Matt, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to sit down with us today. We are excited to discuss with you the long awaited release of 3-AD. Many of us are aware of the compound Adrenosterone, but 3-AD contains Androsterone. For those who are not familiar with Androsterone, can you give us some information about this compound?

MC: I’d just like to say thank you for having me, it is my pleasure to be talking with you. Androsterone is a pro-hormone which converts to the powerful hormone Stanolone through the 3aHSD, 3bHSD, and 17bHSD enzymes. Stanolone is 400% more anabolic then Testoterone which is considered the King of Mass. Most companies would stop there but not AX. They wanted a complete formula that blows away everything else out there which is why I added 11-alpha and 2-androstenol acetate. Both of which dramatically increase nitrogen retention which promotes anabolism and intense pumps.

NP: Androsterone sounds like an extremely potent hormone as a standalone. How did you raise the bar with 3-AD, and can you explain why you included some of the other ingredients in your formulation?

MC: The bigger picture. Androsterone is a good compound but the entire 3-AD formula combines to provide the best legal anabolic available. 3-AD also addresses the shortcomings of all other products in this category, the androgen receptor. The more androgen receptors you have the better the anabolic effect will be. PLCAR increases the amount of androgen receptors, which is why it’s included in 3-AD.

NP: We noticed one of the ingredients in 3-AD is considered a “pheromone”. Can you further explain to our readers the actions and roles of pheromones and how it relates to muscle? Obviously we’re not talking about a “sex in a bottle” scent that will have women fighting over you (sorry guys).

MC: Of course not, and don’t be fooled into thinking that pheromones are exclusive to sexual attraction – some creatures use them to let others know where food is, where home is, whether a predator is coming and quite a few more. The sexual pheromones are typically released in relation to a female’s monthly cycle (i.e. if she’s ripe for breeding), and from men in order to persuade the female that they’re worthy enough of procreating with. With these being tied tightly to the reproductive system and sexual characteristics, it is no surprise that the structure of pheromones typically reflect that of androgens. The only real requirement from that is, and which is applicable in the case of 2-androstenol, to ensure it’s orally bioavailable, and that’s been accomplished with the acetate ester.

NP: Wow, this truly sounds like a potent lineup of formidable ingredients! So are there any side effects associated with 3-AD such as hepatoxicity, hypertension, adverse estrogenic effects, etc…?

MC: There is no risk of hepatoxicity because neither androsterone nor 2-androstenol are methylated. Hypertension shouldn’t be a cause for concern, although hormonals in general can increase red blood cell count or lead to slight water retention. Neither compound aromatizes, so there is no direct conversion to estrogen and therefore no anticipation of estrogenic-related side effects. I have however, seen some compounds that alter mineral levels which can cause slight water retention. The obvious side effects are all possible though, which is to be expected – acne, slight aggression and maybe mild shedding, suppression of natural testosterone production. Each user is different, but these are all possible. Some steroid users use Finasteride to overcome the shedding issues, but in this case 5AR inhibitors will not have any effect on either compound as they are already 5-alpha reduced.

NP: Is post cycle therapy (PCT) required for 3-AD?

MC: Absolutely. 3-AD is hormonal so I highly recommend everyone that uses it has adequate post-cycle therapy on hand from the get-go. I used and would recommend AX’s Advanced PCT, along with Activate Xtreme.

NP: How should one cycle 3-AD for optimal results?

MC: The dosing listed on the bottle is what will work best. Some users depending on bodyweight (220+lbs) may need a slightly higher dose but no one should assume they need it. Users should start at 2 caps twice a day for at least 7 days before increasing the dose to 2 caps- 3 times per day.

NP: How would you cycle 3-AD for maximum growth with minimal side effects?

MC: I think beginners should follow the dosing I’ve recommended until they know how they will respond to 3-AD. For experienced users I’ve always preferred high dosing for short periods of time. I feel this best mimics the way people grow, in short bursts. With 3-AD I would expect great results with 6-8 caps per day for no more then 24-28 days, followed by a 3 week PCT off period.

NP: So what’s the overall consensus on this revolutionary product? What types of gains should one expect to see with 3-AD?

MC: The feedback has been unbelievable! We’ve been seeing gains of anything from 3-18lbs over a four week cycle, with the average being around 12lbs. Side effects have been pretty much non-existent. So obviously I’m very excited about 3-AD and can’t wait to see how everyone else responds to it.

NP: So obviously 3-AD is great for packing on slabs of quality muscle, but is it also beneficial for recompositioning?

MC: Of course! The formula combines a very strong anabolic blend that is ideal for preserving muscle mass while trying to reduce fat stores and PLCAR. Interview with William Llewellyn

NutraPlanet is pleased this month to have a sit down interview with industry figure and Molecular Nutrition CEO William Llewellyn. If you don’t recognize the name, Llewellyn is probably most well known for his research and writings about muscle-building substances, and his widely selling ANABOLICS book series (presently ANABOLICS 2007). Today we are going to talk to him about Molecular Nutrition’s X-Factor (arachidonic acid), one of the hottest natural anabolic supplements on the market right now. It is also a product that seems to be standing the test of time. As we sat down with Llewellyn, X-Factor had just passed its 5-year anniversary. We figured this would be a great time to follow up on the product, and what Llewellyn has learned working with it over the past half decade. Even if you have no idea what this supplement is, the following interview should be a very interesting read!

NP: Bill, thanks for sitting down with us. Before we go into a lot of new detail, can you first give us a quick rundown of what X-Factor (arachidonic acid) actually is?

WL: Sure, I’d be happy to. X-Factor is an anabolic supplement that intensifies how your muscles respond to training. We refer to it as an “Anabolic Catalyst”. It does little for you if you don’t lift weights or exercise intensely. If you do lift, however, you can expect to notice amplified post-workout soreness, much faster strength and muscle mass gains, and enhanced definition while taking X-Factor.

NP: Can you explain why X-Factor makes you more sore, and why that is a good thing for your muscles? Some might instinctively think that the soreness is bad for growth.

WL: Actually, it all goes back to the old saying, “No Pain, No Gain”. Soreness is an excellent indicator of workout productivity, and is directly tied to the muscle’s response to training. Via its local conversion to chemical messengers known as prostaglandins, Arachidonic acid is actually the core thermostat for this soreness/repair/growth response. It is released from your muscles while you are training, and increases local sensitivity to anabolic hormones like testosterone, IGF-1, and insulin. So it is used by the body to direct its repair actions to only those damaged tissues that need it. This explains why training your arms only causes your arms grow, and not your chest, legs, etc. The soreness you tend to notice on X-Factor is generally of the “I had a great workout yesterday” type, and not so much that it is determent to your training.

NP: So among other things, arachidonic acid makes your muscles use more testosterone. Does it also increase testosterone levels?

WL: No, it doesn’t appear to do so, only the sensitivity to this hormone. I like to view this as a good thing though, as it works extremely well without altering your hormone levels. So there is no “crash” when you stop taking it. The gains are very well retained. It also opens the possibility of stacking. Many consumers like to stack X-Factor with their favorite testosterone booster, for example, and usually report this to be a strong combination. It honestly stacks well with most muscle building supplements, as again, it increases the very core anabolic response. Other supplements tend to support muscle growth by altering downstream events, so there is little overlap, and good opportunity for synergy.

NP: What are the best gains you’ve seen with X-Factor alone?

WL: Well I’d have to say the best gains I’ve seen from X-Factor were on a guy that added 25 pounds of weight from one cycle. It was largely muscle, but he was on a heavy bulk and gained some fat too. I’d like to tell you those gains were typical, but short of steroids nothing legitimately delivers gains like that consistently. We usually see between 7 and 15 pounds of lean muscle gain. For a natural product, I’d like to say these numbers of unprecedented.

NP: Wow. Those are certainly impressive numbers. It makes me ask if any natural competitive bodybuilders use the product?

WL: Yes. It is definitely growing in popularity among natural competitors. Just as an off the top of my head example, Jeremy Vargas just won the Mr. New Jersey and Mr. Long Island titles using X-Factor for his contest prep. We talk to a lot of guys that are using it in their pre-contest prep actually, both to gain bulk, and closer to show time, to retain muscle mass during calorie depletion.

NP: Is it very good for maintaining mass during calorie restriction?

WL: Definitely. Admittedly calorie restriction is not the best environment to support muscle mass. But even so, we’ve actually had some guys report not only muscle retention, but even mild gains (a few pounds) during calorie deficit. I confess, this is one of the responses that took me by surprise at first. I even dismissed the first reports of this type. Eventually I had to concede it was really happening. Can’t explain it except to say that this is indeed a very strong anabolic nutrient. Under the right conditions it really fine-tunes the body’s anabolic response to training.

NP: OK, I think we have sufficiently covered the basics. Now onto the new stuff. First, what is the deal about AA and Fish Oil? I’ve seen mixed messages. Is it OK to stack the two?

WL: Yes, it is actually. At first, knowing that there are studies suggesting that Omega 3 fatty acids can compete with arachidonic acid for storage and conversion enzymes, we advised everyone to limit extra Omega 3 intake while taking X-Factor. We really just wanted to be sure it worked for everyone. After a lot of experimentation, and some new research, we have reversed this position almost completely. Unless you have a diet unduly excessive in Omega 3’s, they should not interfere substantially with X-Factor. In fact, we even tell people they can supplement Omega 3’s while taking X-Factor if they want. A couple of caps per day may even lend some synergy.

NP: What new research are you referring to?

WL: There have been a number of new studies on AA actually. The British Journal of Nutrition published an important one last year showing Omega-3 supplementations to have no effect on arachidonic acid levels. The subjects took a good dose of AA with their Omega-3’s too, about 850mg per day. This is only about 150mg shy of what we recommend at the maximum. There has been some additional data to suggest that low levels of added Omega-3’s might even increase the membrane uptake of arachidonic acid. At the very least, these studies, combined with our own observations, has led to us removing the “Limit Omega 3’s” recommendations.

NP: You guys actually funded a study on X-Factor yourselves. This is rare for sports supplements. You clearly had a lot of faith in it. How did that go?

WL: Yes, it was conducted by the Exercise & Sport Nutrition Laboratory at Baylor University. For a small study (only 15 people per side), we were extremely pleased with the results. The X-Factor group noticed greater gains on every measure of muscle mass, strength, and performance. Although individual variability can quickly blur the strength of such numbers with small group studies like this (they must maintain 95% consistency across groups to be considered, and both groups will make gains in training studies), we reached full statistical significance on a key measure of muscle performance called Peak Anaerobic Power, and statically strong measures on other anaerobic variables including bench press strength, anaerobic endurance, and average anaerobic power. This is looked at as the first clinical “proof” that arachidonic acid helps weight training performance. Following this success, you should expect to see more studies on arachidonic acid and its effects on sports performance. We’re really excited for what the future will hold for arachidonic acid, especially in the scientific arena.

NP: What about safety? Were there any side effects during the study?

WL: No, none at all. We asked Baylor to take extensive health measurements too. We also wanted to add to the safety data that was already available on arachidonic acid, not just repeat it. You see, years ago they approved this nutrient for use in baby formula, to aid infant development. To get this difficult level of approval extensive safety studies were conducted and presented to the FDA. So we had a lot to draw from already. But one of the key areas we asked Baylor to add to was the inflammatory response to arachidonic acid while training. During their study the X-Factor group actually noticed a strong lowering of resting IL-6 levels. IL-6, or Interleukin-6, is a central regulator of inflammation. You expect elevated levels with increase inflammation. We believe that by improving local insulin sensitivity, X-Factor actually reduces systemic inflammatory markers. We don’t go as far to say that it is anti-inflammatory supplement though. Arachidonic acid can and will be used by the body to increase localized inflammation (as in our post-training anabolic response) when necessary, so if you have an inflammatory condition it may exacerbate symptoms. Likewise, we tell you not to take it if you have any inflammatory condition. You should definitely check with your doctor if you aren’t sure. It is also advised to cycle it (50 days on, 50 days off minimum).

NP: Well I see we’ve been going for a while now, and I don’t want to keep you. I know you have a lot going on now. I just want to say thank you on behalf of NutraPlanet.
